The Resort - who visits Magaluf?

Sun, Sea, Sand, Sangria and more Sangria......

If you were to ask people today to sum up Magaluf as a resort, most would say:

young lively people, great clubs, fantastic nightlife, party atmosphere, great beach and above all don't go if you need a quiet holiday!

All of these opinions are true of the resort. Currently the government of Mallorca plan a regeneration of the area in the hope of attracting a wider range of tourists. The plan involves a tremendous amount of money being spent and only time will tell if it will become a reality.

The resort grew in popularity with young tourists from the late 1970s. When tourism was booming in the 1980/90s, many Apartments and Hotels were built in the resort to cope with the demand. Today, Magaluf is still a very popular destination for young tourist holidays or those enjoying Stag or Hen weekend trips. It is a magnet for those looking for amazing night-life. The main

strip is Punta Ballena in the heart of the resort with most bars, fun pubs, nightclubs staying open all night long.

The nationality of visitors are mainly British however in the last few years there has been an increase in Skandinavians, Eastern Europeans and you will even find French and Italians due to the current crisis in the middle east.

Magaluf flows from the Torrenova area alongside Palmanova and extends all the way to the Western Waterpark with Katmandu more or less in the centre of the resort.

If your flight happens to arrive very early or late check the timetables to ensure that the buses are still running.

Beach and Watersports, what are they like?

The large bay of Magaluf, stretching from Torrenova to Cala Vinyes, has amazing fine golden sand. It is of excellent quality and well maintained by Calvia Adjuntament (local council) just like the sister resort of Palmanova. From the beach you have a good view of the 'Illa de Sa Porrassa' and you can watch the various party boats and boat trips coming into the jetty. You will find plenty of sunbeds and parasols for rent as well as all kinds of watersports such as ski-ing, windsurfing, kite-surfing, bananaboat, waker board etc. The main part of the beach has the pedestrian walkway 'Paseo Maritimo'. This is where you will find many of the newer bars and restaurants, all easily accessible from the beach/promenade area.

Should I Travel with a Tour Operator or Independently?

You can easily reserve a Package Holiday to Magaluf with one of the many Tour Operators such as Thomsons, First Choice, Jet 2, Thomas Cook or Easyjet.

Because the majority of tourists visiting the area are young people, the advantage of travelling with a Tour Operator is that the flight, hotel and transport to and from the accommodation is pre-arranged.

There is also the added advantage of having a representative in the resort itself.. This can be very beneficial especially for those with little experience of travelling abroad or those who need any help or guidance during their holiday. Alternatively if you prefer travelling independently, you can search for a cheap flight/hotel on the internet and arrange your transport privately.

Where should I stay?

You could choose to stay at Mallorca Rocks Hotel on the edge of the resort and enjoy the twice weekly live gigs and daily music beside the swimming pool.

Pre-gig boat party trips are also available, just the thing to get you in the party mood!

Alternatively you can buy ticket-only for the gigs, for more information see Mallorca Rocks website

Is it all Fast Food?

Fast Food, McDonalds

McDonalds MagalufYou will find an extensive range of food types available in the resort with enough variety to suit all tourist tastes, not just fast food such as McDonalds or KFC! You will find some traditional Spanish restaurants specialising in Tapas and you will also find plenty of British cafes and restaurants many offering full english breakfast from early morning until late in the afternoon!

There are also several Indian, Chinese and Italian restaurants dotted around the resort. Many of the kebab/fast food businesses remain open until the small hours to cope with the demand for snacks etc after a great night out clubbing!

punta ballena magaluftokyo joes

Punta Ballena - The Strip                                                                  Tokio Joes

The streets of Magaluf have a huge range of bars, disco-pubs, clubs, cafes, fast food, and although many are open in the day-time they come to life at night. Many of the bars offer happy-hours and gimmicks to try to entice tourists inside. Most remain open ALL night, many until daylight! BCM is a very popular nightclub and behind this is BCM Square which also has a good range of bars which are open until daylight! Tokio Joes is another popular spot seen in the picture above.

For an evening entertainment show, you could try Pirates on the edge of the resort or take a short trip to visit Pacha another very popular nightclub on the edge of Palmanova. You could walk there but we would advise a taxi! If you need more information on BCM and Pacha - see more here...

What is Balconing?

There's no doubt about it, Magaluf is a great holiday resort for the young

or young at heart!. You can party all night long and after a few hours sleep, lie on the beach to soak up some Mallorca sun.

The resort in the past had a bad reputation for rowdiness and hooliganism however now you will find that the local Police keep good order in the streets during the night-time fun.

In the last couple of years there has been a lot of bad press mainly about Magaluf due to 'Balconing'. This is the term used when people, normally after a nights heavy drinking, jump from balcony to balcony or towards the swimmingpool. This has resulted in several deaths and some horrific injuries.

Please be aware of the dangers of drinking huge volumes of alcohol especially if you start drinking in the day and continue through the night. Dehydration can

also be a factor, drink plenty of water!

If you or your friends have a problem in Mallorca you can contact the Consulate in Palma.
