The Resort - who visits Magaluf?

Sun, Sea, Sand, Sangria and more Sangria......

If you were to ask people today to sum up Magaluf as a resort, most would say

"young lively people, great clubs, fantastic nightlife, party atmosphere and above all don't go if you need a quiet holiday"

While all these opinions are still true Magaluf has been undergoing changes. Currently the Balearic Government have an ongoing regeneration plan trying to attract more families and couples to the resort. A tremendous amount of money has been spent and only time will tell if the plan is a success.

Magaluf Beach on a hot summers day Magaluf Sandy Beach

Magaluf grew in popularity when young tourists, mainly from Britain, flocked there in the 1970s. Later, when tourism was booming many Apartments and Hotels were built to cope with the accommodation demand.

Today, the resort with its amazing nightlife is still the top holiday destination for young British Tourists or those seeking Stag or Hen weekend trips.

The main 'strip' is Punta Ballena in the heart of the resort where most bars, fun pubs, nightclubs stay open all night long.

Although the main visitors are British, in the last few years there has been an increase in Skandinavians, Eastern Europeans and you will even find some French and Italians who are avoiding other destinations due to conflicts in other countries.

Magaluf flows from the Torrenova area alongside Palmanova and extends all the way to the Western Waterpark with Katmandu more or less in the centre of the resort.

How do I get to the resort from the Airport?

From Palma Airport you can take a taxi direct to the resort for around 45 euros. Note that there is an additional charge for night taxis/luggage.

A cheaper transport option is the Airport Resort Bus to Palmanova/Magaluf or if the times are not suitable, take the No1 Palma Bus to the bus station (Plaza de Espana) and change for a TIB (Transport Illes Baleares) bus 104, 106 which will take you to the resort. If you have a very late flight arrival the buses might not be an option.

You could also book online a journey with a Private Bus Transfer Company

Beach and Watersports, what are they like?

The large bay of Magaluf, stretching from Torrenova to Cala Vinyas, has amazing fine golden sand. The beach is well maintained by Calvia Adjuntament (local council) just like the sister resort of Palmanova.

From the beach you have a good view of the 'Illa de Sa Porrassa' and you will also see the various Party Boats and Boat Trips docking at the Jetty. There are plenty of sunbeds and parasols for rent as well as all kinds of watersports such as ski-ing, windsurfing, kite-surfing, bananaboat, waker board and you could even try scuba diving

A pedestrian walkway 'Paseo Maritimo' runs alongside the beach where you will find many upmarket bars and restaurants, all easily accessible.

Should I Travel with a Tour Operator or Independently?

You can easily reserve a Package Holiday to Magaluf with one of the many Tour Operators such as Tui, First Choice, Jet 2 Holidays or Thomas Cook.

Because the majority of tourists visiting the area are young people, the advantage of travelling with a Tour Operator is that the flight, hotel and transport to and from the accommodation is pre-arranged.

There is also the added advantage of having a representative in the resort itself.. This can be very beneficial especially for those with little experience of travelling abroad or those who need any help or guidance during their holiday. Alternatively if you prefer travelling independently, you can search for a cheap flight/hotel on the internet and arrange your transport privately.

Where should I stay?

There are many hotel and apartment options, however if you want to have your holiday in peak months, July and August, it's best to reserve early. From small hotels without pool to large hotels with a range of facilities on offer, there is accommodation to suit everyone.

You could choose to stay at the BH Complex - BCM Planet Dance Hotel formerly the Mallorca Rocks Hotel. This is on the edge of the resort and especially suited to young fun loving people.

Pre-gig boat party trips are also available, just the thing to get you in the party mood!

Punta Ballena - The StripTokio Joes

The streets of Magaluf have a huge range of bars, disco-pubs, clubs, cafes, fast food, and although many are open in the day-time they really come to life at night. Many of the bars offer happy-hour and gimmicks to try to entice tourists inside. Most remain open ALL night, many until daylight! BCM and Titos Calvia Beach are very popular nightclubs to visit and just behind those you will find the famous BCM Square which also has a good range of bars open until daylight! Tokio Joes is another popular spot seen in the picture above.

What is Balconing?

There's no doubt about it, Magaluf is a great holiday resort for the young

or young at heart!. You can party all night long and after a few hours sleep, lie on the beach to soak up some Mallorca sun.

The resort in the past had a bad reputation for rowdiness and hooliganism however now you will find that the local Police keep good order in the streets during the night-time fun.

In the last couple of years there has been a lot of bad press mainly about Magaluf due to 'Balconing'. This is the term used when people, normally after a nights heavy drinking, jump from balcony to balcony or towards the swimmingpool. This has resulted in several deaths and some horrific injuries.

Please be aware of the dangers of drinking huge volumes of alcohol especially if you start drinking in the day and continue through the night. Dehydration can

also be a factor, drink plenty of water!

If you or your friends have a problem in Mallorca you can contact the Consulate in Palma.
